Difficult Drawing IV: Transit drawing I

1999

Pen on plastic
70 x 30 cm

The project is inspired from the decoration within the carriages of London's Underground.
In the interior of the 'Victoria' tube line for example, a distinctive geometric pattern is printed on the part of the walls that is assigned to advertisement space. As more and more wall space is taken up by advertisement-panels, less decorative 'wallpaper' is visible.
The drawing was created by copying the decorative pattern revealed on an unsold 'advertisement-space' while being seated on a tube journey. It is drawn on the back of an advertisement panel. In the course of transit, it was more difficult to replicate the pattern whereas when the carriage was stationary, a more accurate imitation was achieved.
The drawing can be understood as a visual transcript of movement and time.
