Fountain proposal for Chicago Prize 2005

Collaboration with Architect Dion Young
2005

Competition, Chicago Architectural Club.

Submission for an idea-competition for a new identity of the unused water tanks in Chicago's cityscape.
Our idea turns the unused water tanks into fountains, renewing their former function as water storage facilities and preserving aspects of their original purpose.
The water tank as a fountain celebrates the historic use of water as a fire suppressant.
The fountains are sustainable through solar panel cladding on the exterior of the water tank. The sound of the fountain's water action is transmitted to street level speakers enhancing the pedestrian experience of the abstracted fountain spectacle several meters above.
The fountains visually emphasise the prominent locations of the water tanks, drawing attention to the importance of these structures and their relationship to Chicago's past and future identity.
